Myriam Bedard has apparently long been playing around, not concerned about niceties, such as marriage. She was never married to Jean Paquet, father of Myriam's daughter Maude, for example. Now, she is running around with a less-wholesome character, Nima Mazhari, who has lots of hair and beard. Radio Canada has an article, in French, about Jean Paquet. I am convinced that Google is censoring search results

I find that Yahoo image search is less likely to censor image search results. I can think of some tests that would either confirm or deny that theory. I know for certain, that Google even admits to certain types of censoring, as pressure groups have caused them to remove sensitive images from the result. If you never try such things, even as an experiment, you might not realize what is happening. I first realized what they were doing, some months ago, when images vanished from the cache and then from results. They tend to me women who may have asked to be removed, as well as celebrity women. I suspect that Google's lefty political agenda is driving this sort of thing. I could be wrong about the motivation, but something is definitely afoot.

The new Dallas County Prosecutor is getting rid of the experienced prosecutors

Apparently, in the new regime, the new Dallas County Prosecutor, Craig Watkins, is getting rid of experienced people, so he can bring in his Democratic buddies. KRLD has a short piece on the subject. Craig is a defense attorney, not a prosecutor. Dallas County is also getting new judges, alledgedly lacking in much experience. There may be some who are experienced, by many very good, but Republican judges lost in the recent election. I have wondered if Dallas is turning into another Minneapolis, where leftist politics rules the roost. The Dallas Morning News has a longer piece. The "justice system" in Dallas County has taken a major hit, and we are going to see epic politicization, apparently.

Two good pieces on success

I have been wracking my brain, trying to remember where I had read this one piece about success. All I could remember was something about a wealthy man having at times risked his entire net worth to achieve success. The other article was the latest by Ben Stein. I finally realized that where I had seen the "entire net worth" article was on RealClearPolitics.com.

I found that the piece was Ruben Navarette's "If You Want Something, Go Get It". He says:

"I do things that make other people nauseous,'' he said, explaining that he had often gambled his entire net worth on business deals that paid off.

The other article was Ben Stein's piece "Success Is All in a Day's Work":

...I know a lot of really successful people -- in finance, in government, in politics, in Hollywood, in journalism, in literature.

Their common denominator is a modicum of talent and a capacity and an eagerness -- not just a willingness, but an eagerness -- to work like Trojans to get ahead. I don't know of one really successful, famous man or woman who didn't work insanely hard to get there and to stay there.

I suspect that I omitted Ben Stein's "money quote", as I didn't feel that the other quote quite captured his message. What he says is:

But for those who want to be rich and famous (or rich or famous), there's no way to do it without daily, unremitting work. It's best if the seeker loves his work so much that he or she doesn't even consider it a burden, but rather a joyful, fulfilling, highly organizing principle of life.

I suspect that Google Image search may be censoring pictures, and have started using the Yahoo image search, which seems to be doing less censoring. Using Yahoo, I saw this Britney Spears pic that I had not seen before. This seems to be a related pic.

I had been looking for a picture of Myriam Bedard and her "common-law husband". The picture I found in the Ottawa Citizen shows both of them and her daughter. Myriam now has been arrested. This entire business seems very bizarre. Apparently, Myriam's lifestyle is just as bizarre as this case. Her father's comment is that Myriam is "under" Nima Mazhari's "spell".

Candy Barr (Juanita Slusher)

When "Candy Barr" (Juanita Slusher) died, I did some research about her. I noticed that there were a good number of pics on the web that were publically available. I had originally seen her pics back in the 1960's. She was still famous at the time. The claim was that she had been underage at the time the classic stag movie, "Smart Alec" was made, but if that were really true, the footage would be banned, this silly, modern age. In fact, the footage can be seen, so I am skeptical about the claim. I am also skeptical that she was forced at gunpoint to be in the film, as there is not evidence that she was being coerced. I have not seen the complete flick, but there is a video tape (unfortunately) that shows an extended excerpt from "Smart Alec". Image Makers has a "Candy Barr" photo gallery. She does look rather like the blue collar star, rather than the polished modern porn stars.

My aunt and uncle, and cousins, lived at Blind Lake, in Michigan, in the early 1960's. I was the butt of jokes for a long time, because when I saw Connie Kreski, when she was 15 years old in a bathing suit, I walked off the dock into the water. The topic still comes up, this long after the event, as everyone got a good laugh out of it (except me). She had her 15 minutes of fame, after appearing in Playboy, when she was in the vanity flick "Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" with Anthony Newley.

Paging

Have you ever used a computer with too little memory for the kind of work you are doing? I have frequently been asked to do so, as a consultant, and have agonized, while waiting for Windows to "page". The computer effectively "freezes" and you sit until it "decides" to come alive again. This problem is in the process of being solved where I am currently at, thankfully, as will be getting enough more memory to bring us to 1GB, which is generally adequate. Doing Java development with Eclipse and 512 MB is a major bother, but it can be done, if you are patient and willing to burn a lot of time while Eclipse or the PC is "frozen". You can set the JVM args for Eclipse to a respectable amount, so that Eclipse is better behaved: ""C:\Eclipse 3.1.1\eclipse.exe" -vmargs -Xmx1024m".

Yahoo Mail has been deteriorating, as of late

I had experimented with the Yahoo Mail Beta, but had given up on it (repeatedly), due to performance issues. I am a big Yahoo Mail use, as I receive over 500 mails a day (mostly spam). Lately, I have been getting error messages from Yahoo Mail, saying that their servers are having problems. They have generally been pretty reliable in the past, but this has been getting worse over the last month or so.

Things are getting even more ridiculous

According to ChillingEffects.org and Google Image Search, Google is censoring material. Google already has the reputation of bowing to the Chinese goverment and restricting search results, accordingly. They are also doing that in the rest of the world, or at least the part accessible through the regular Google Image Search.

There used to be this Russian site, trashovnik.sbu.ru, that liked Emma Watson. They had some fake shots like this (they had to be fake, given what they were). 65 years ago today

65 years ago, today, my wife's aunt and uncle were living in Hawaii. Her uncle had been a machinist in the navy, on a battleship. When he was ready to get out, the navy offered him a job as a machinist at Pearl Harbor. My wife's uncle had an enduring interest in mechanical devices and aviation. He worked at Ford Island, doing machining jobs for PBYs and other aircraft. Early on Sunday morning of December 7, 1941, they looked out and saw trouble at Pearl Harbor. My wife's uncle Jim and his neighbor, who also worked on the base, went to the base, after the attack, to help clean up afterward.

Back in Detroit, on December 7, my Dad resolved to enlist in the Navy. My grandfather had fought in France in 1918 and had been gassed and concussed. He counseled my dad to look at the Navy, "to stay away from the mud". On December 8, my Dad enlisted and was sent to Great Lakes for boot camp. He got very sick with Catarrhal Fever. He survived and went to Indianapolis for radio school, after boot camp. From there, he was sent to New England, where PC-470 was completing. They worked up and were sent to Key West, to run convoys to Panama, Cuba, and South America. He did that until 1944, when PC-470 was sent to the West Coast, to be fitted out for service in the invasion of the Philippines. My Dad left PC-470 in San Diego. He eventually was sent to the Pacific Northwest to meet YF-720 being sent out to the Western Pacific by way of Pearl Harbor. At Pearl, he saw the USS Franklin, as she passed through on her way to the battles in the Western Pacific, as well. He also saw her towed back, a twisted wreck. From Pearl, the YF was eventually towed out to Leyte Gulf, after the battle, to supply warships, as a YF was a floating warehouse. At the end of the war, my Dad, and everyone else, fired off all their pyrotechnics to celebrate. After the war, he went to the University of Michigan on the GI Bill. Both my grandfathers had graduated from there after the Great War, in the 1920s.

In Taxi Driver, he was teh 12-year old Jodie's pimp and lover.

Michael Heraghty has a piece on usability and AJAX web appliations

Michael Heraghty writes at Media Junk about the problems associated with AJAX-based web sites in terms of usability. My own personal take on it is that server-side performance on high volume sites makes some AJAX interfaces almost unbearable. An example is the Yahoo Mail beta, which I keep trying and then quickly stopping. Michael says:

Interfaces that update on the fly cause usability headaches for interaction designers for one simple reason: with RIAs, the web page doesn't refresh.

As counter-intuitive as it sounds, page refresh is useful; it signals that the application is responding to your actions. And, until all sites are RIAs, users will expect page refresh. This was exactly what Vikram Goyal discovered when he decided to try an Ajaxian search interface out on some users:

Not only has she lost her celebrity status, but her moves against Paul McCartney have alienated his fans, and have brought out the wackos among them. That is why she is getting the death threats. She seems to remain clueless, however. She continues to fancy herself as the second coming of Princess Di.

A couple of days ago, Sitemeter zeroed out the database for Dreadnought Cruisers blog for about a week

One of the downsides of using a free service is that you are at their mercy. A couple of days ago, Sitemeter lost some history for the Dreadnought Cruisers blog. I am not sure of the explanation, but everything historical seems to be gone from the database. I had thought that they had lost everything, but they just zeroed out from 18 November to 24 November 2006.

Weight Watchers Update

This week, I was down 2.2 lbs for a total of 47.8 lbs since I started the last Saturday of February 2006. An amazing feature of the Weight Watchers program has been that I have home-fry potatoes almost every day for breakfast. On the weekends, I have a fried egg, three slices of crisp bacon, sliced tomatoes, a grilled English muffin, and home fries with onions and green peppers. Once every week or two, at Chili's, I have Queso and chips, along with a burger, no bun, and sauteed onions, green peppers, and mushrooms. The secret being that on the plan, you compensate for splurges in the week.

The blogger Fred, at GoodShit, has a post about Pre-Raphaelite art and has a Waterhouse painting, the Lady of Shallot (the link to Fred's blog isn't working for me). For more, look at Lit19.com. Jim has many Waterhouse paintings, which I like a great deal. Dante Gabriel Rossetti is also quite good, but I am most partial to Waterhouse. There is a nice pic of her from cherudat.com, but they are playing games so that I can not link directly to the pic. That forces me to use the same pic from another site, my.toast.com.au.

Stan, at nudesonline, has a nice loop

The link was from a Jennifer Love Hewitt pic the nude-celeb-site.com. That takes you to a page from Stan at nudesonline.com. What you get is to see a loop, in Flash video, that is very nice, although I don't recognize it as Jennifer Love Hewitt, although it could be, as I have only seen her in her Ghost Whisperer guise. Of course, while softcore, it is not anywhere near "worksafe".

Google Image Search Rules!

Some truly amazing things can be found with Google Image Search, at least with "Safe Search" turned off. All you have to do is search and much is there for free. I addition, Google Video Search has things such as a video of Denise Richards stripping. Just use the Google Video Search with "Denise Richards" as the search string. That will bring this up:

Web site traffic

Since June, I stumbled on to the fact that traffic was coming from Google Image search, primarily from North America, but also from the UK and other European countries. Since then, I have been periodically "priming the pump". Since I run with open Sitemeter, you can see what has been happening by clicking on the Sitemeter image. Sadly, going this direction has "lowered the level" of content, but I thought that bringing readers would allow them to look at more than pics. The peak was early in the spike in traffic: October 19th, 2006, when traffic reached about 1,590 Sitemeter visits in a single day. The lowpoint, since this started, was on Friday November 10th., when there were just 134 Sitemeter visits. Traffic has picked back up, since that low, so that yesterday was an estimated 535. I won't know the real numbers until I get the weekly report. All I can do now is to make estimates from the weekly graph. I have not heard about anyone writing about this sort of phenomenon, but I cannot believe that this is a unique situation. The higher traffic level started late in the day on October 17th, and has not stopped, despite the slowdowns along the way. The Sitemeter graphs leave a lot to be desired, but they allow you to have a look at what has happened in the last month, at least. Something that you should know is that you do not have to directly link to images and have them show in the page when you go there. I link to them with a "target='_blank'", which will cause a new browser to be opened with the image. I see this as saving someone's bandwidth, unless a reader clicks the link. I always try to put a link to the original page, to help whomever has hosted the image.

For the first time this year, I spent a good big of time watching a football game

I have not spent any time this year watching any sports, and especially football. Tonight was different, however. My wife turned on the Dallas-Indianapolis game. I kept being drawn back to the television. The reason being that the Cowboys did well. As the game progressed and you could see that the Cowboys had a shot at winning, we were riveted to the game. We didn't go to the restaurant until the game ended. The Cowboys knocked off the Colts and handed them their first loss of the year.

What's wrong in Iraq: from Karol Scheinen at Alarming News

Karol Scheinen, at Alarming news, says that she has heard from soldiers who have been in Iraq is that we have placed unacceptable limits on our ability to fight. That is the reason that we are not doing better:

Acknowledge that we are at war and act accordingly- this is my preference and from anecdotal conversations with returning troops, it seems to be the one military people favor as well.

We are pretending that we are there on some kind of humanitarian mission. When I hear about "good news" from Iraq it's inevitably a new water tower or pipeline or road or school. And that's all terrific. But how many terrorists did we kill today? How many towns did we lock down and show that if people support terrorists, if they harbor them, if they help them, we will kill them? The kid glove treatment has got to stop. I only care about the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people if they are helping us secure the region. If they are assisting in the chaos-kill them.

I approve of the humanitarian component of the Iraq war, I do, I just don't approve of the war part of the Iraq war. Don't tell me about the Iraqi schoolchildren and how they have shoes now or how Baghdad has multiple cell phone companies. I care, just not as much as I care about the survival of our civilization and about world peace and prosperity in the long-term.

Let's stop pretending we're not in a war. It's the only way to win it.

I hope Britney can come to accept sale of the sex tape as well as Paris Hilton eventually did. News of the World, in the UK, has the story. The main thing she has going for her is the pre-nuptial agreement. If she can bear the tape, then she is safe. If she lets Kevin use the tape for blackmail, then she is in trouble.

Ann Althouse on Kevin Barrett

What Ann Althouse says that Kevin Barrett is teaching is appalling. He is lucky that we don't jail 9/11 deniers the way the Europeans jail holocaust deniers:

"It's become much more opinionated now that we're doing 9-11," Bromley said, referring to the tone and progress of the course. "He's trying to explain both views, but he's biased. I don't feel like he's presented enough info on the other side."

Freshman Jesse Moya disagreed, saying Barrett had been "very objective."

Moya, who said his uncle died in the World Trade Center attacks, said he had entered the course believing the attacks were the work of Islamic terrorists. He now believes otherwise.

"It seems like a more logical explanation that it was the U.S. government," he said.

How interesting that the student who did not perceive bias is the one who became convinced of the truth of the conspiracy theory. It's not surprising. Trying not to show bias -- as Barrett was told he needed to do -- doesn't necessarily produce neutrality. It is more likely that it will package the message in a more palatable form.

Weight Watcher's update: my current status

I have now been following Weight Watchers for 38 weeks. This week, I lost 1.4 lbs for a total of 44.8 lbs since I started on the last Saturday of February. Both Weight Watchers and low-carb work. If you want to lose weight fast, then low-carb will do it. If you want more diversity in what you can eat, and you want to eat things that you really like, then Weight Watchers offers that opportunity while you still lose weight. I have lost at somewhat more than a pound a week, although I have tended to lose very little or even pop up a bit, and then lose a good bit in one week. I was interested to hear this week that a large study showed that there were no ill-effects and even good effects from a low-carb diet.

Dick Armey is a sharp guy (PhD?). He has a piece in the Opinion Journal about the "End of the Revolution" that he and Newt Gingrich had taken to success in 1994. To even create the 1994 revolution, they had to beat the old, bad Republicans who eventually coopted the revolution and drove it into the ground. They might have been different "old, bad Republicans" (Robert Novak Republicans), but they had the same, bad attitudes. Being in the House and Senate was an opportunity to exercise power and rake in goodies. That was the same sort of attitude that doomed the Democrats in 1994. Now, the Republicans had become them.

There is an AP story on Yahoo News that makes Pat Tillman's death look like a criminal act (to my unpracticed eye). The shooters even heard him say who he was, and shot him and his Afghan companion, who was working with Army Special Forces. To make matters worse, the facts were covered up, all the way up the line, as they were so damaging.

I think you would find throughout the corps of Democrats who were elected yesterday in Dallas County, that the new people are generally under-qualfied. The new Dallas County Prosecutor has been a defense attorney, while the guy he defeated has worked as a prosecutor for at least 20 years. Where the question was decided by people who lived within the city of Dallas, Democrats were elected. The only time when that was not the case was when Republicans were running unopposed. The Democrats seemed to have had to stretch to recruit enough people to run.

The split between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline is long overdue. The only remaining questions are: why did she marry him to begin with and why did the split take so long, given all the provocations she had over the last two years. Another question is: "why now?" The Democrats seem to have had a harder time finding well-qualified candidates in Dallas County, but they won anyway. Only one Republican judge may win, and that is still extremely close. The Dallas Morning News has the story.

We could well be in the "doomsday" scenario

I would not be surprised, at this point, if the Democrats take control of both houses of Congress. All indications are that we would be in deep trouble, if that actually happens. I would expect that some immediate steps with bad consequences would be that they would follow through and rescind the tax cuts, if not raise taxes, and cause a percipitous pull out from Iraq. Both of those would be a bad thing for the country.

My theory about the stock market

My theory about the stock market is that there had been six down days because the market had come to believe that the Democrats would take the House and Senate. The latest polls gave hope that this might not happen. My theory is that the big move up on the Dow and NASDAQ were due to this hope. I think that Yahoo Finance is trying to spin this by saying that buyouts were fueling the move up. My coworker says that I am wrong, and that foreign markets were up before ours opened, and we went up because they did.

Heather Mills reportedly wants

Then again, maybe things are not so bad

There is an AP story about employment falling and payrolls increasing. Maybe, there is just a lot of spin, trying to influence the election. After all, we saw that employees are finally starting to see big pay increases. That had been the negative spin, that the economy was good but employees were not seeing their pay increase. Well, employees are finally starting to see higher income, and companies are hiring.

I suspect that the economy is being hurt because of the poll numbers

I believe that the poll numbers indicating that the Democrats could win the House and Senate are hurting the stock market and economy. My prediction is that if the Republicans pull off an upset win, the stock market and economy will improve.

Brian Maloney, at The Radio Equalizer, talks about Don Imus talking with John Kerry. He says that Don Imus let him off easy:

Marc Cooper, my favorite leftist, will not defend John Kerry

I suspect that John Kerry's remarks that got him into trouble reflect what he actually thinks. He is a goof-ball leftist elitist (who is not very elite), and this is very consistent with that position. Marc Cooper, my favorite leftist intellectual, who I largely disagree with, says he will not defend John Kerry, in a piece called "Dumb and Dumber":

Just because I find George W. Bush distasteful doesn't mean I have to either excuse or defend John Kerry. In this age of television, Bush is a guy who seems a lot dumber than he actually is (he got a 1206 score on his SAT -- about 100 points more than I did, but then again I was still recovering from some, um, experimentation the night before with lysergic acid). And Kerry looks smarter than he probably is (he got D's in geology, history and political science during his first year at Yale). What a great, national relief it will be to see Bush retire from the national political stage. I would have hoped Kerry would have been shut down after his 2004 defeat. But no such luck. His highly-publicized remarks made here in California on Monday were just plain...dumb:

"Education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

At least, Blogger is working today. That has enabled me to write, instead of having to wait until evening, as has been the case, recently. Blogger is really a great service from Google, but when Blogger is not working, the impact is great, and on many people. I have been a user for almost three years.

I voted early today

I did early voting today, and the process went fast. As the Republican position in the polls has worsened, by resolve has grown stronger. I voted a straight party ticket, as befits a good red-stater.

I never watched Baywatch, although I did watch the spoof, softporn version on television in Memphis, back in 1997 or early 1998. Someone has a representative pic of girls posing in the trademark red swimsuits.

The 1960's and 1970's were quite different from now: there was more freedom

I was at our pastor's retirement ceremony, and speakers talked about things that they did in the 1960's and 1970's. The world was really different from now. This was before Government passed laws governing many things that were either not in place, or were not enforced. They were talking about driving down the highway in the pastor's GTO at 120 mph. I could remember driving from Kalamazoo to Ann Arbor at a 100 mph in a Corvair Corsa, no more than a year old (so much for "unsafe at any speed"). Young men and women all read Playboy, and looked forward with great anticipation to seeing the cartoons. Playboy published "literature", such things as Nicholas Meyer's "Seven Percent Solution".

Admittedly, things were pretty weird, because there such things a platform shoes for men, plaid suits, and bell-bottoms. Not so weird were "hip-huggers" for girls. Larry Flynt, in Hustler, published pictures of a half-naked 15-year old girl. It wasn't illegal, and the only complaints were that he ought to be showing mature women, instead. Now, he would go to jail, and they would throw the key away. We are so aggressive at suppressing things we don't like, that it doesn't matter that no child was molested, and someone who looked at the pics was not a child molester. Now, that is "prohibited material", and you will be sent to our equivalent of a Gulag for a long time.

Up through the early 1980's at least, at Wild Lake High School, in Columbia, Maryland, they had a smoking room for students (it was a very progressive place). Writers in the local paper would reminisce about buying LSD at the edge of the playground at an older high school, in the early 1970's. I am not saying it was better, but we still had a lot of freedoms, even in the early 1980's. Now that is all changed, and for the worse. Smokers are being abused, because they are a favorite target of demagogues, as are people who consume "adult beverages". The team of leftists and trial lawyers are to blame for much of it, along with the combination of leftist politicians and our Southern Baptist friends.

I have mentioned on this blog for a very long time that I think this country may be about ready for a woman to serve as president, but Hillary isn't going to be that woman. She'll get the nod from the Democrats. Don't get me wrong. It will be actually a lot of fun to watch the Clinton machine batter and bruise people like John Kerry, Al Gore, and anybody else that gets in her way to the nomination.

But there's something about Hillary that is an immediate disqualifier with millions and millions of voters, mostly male.

That voice. That shrill campaign voice. It returned Saturday morning. If you missed it, I have preserved the quality of the audio to near-CD quality. It should be played far and wide for the next two years.

Ohio is crucial for Hillary to get to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. If you look at a red state/blue state electoral map, if you are a Democrat, you can't get to 271 electoral votes without picking up a state like Ohio, with 20 EV's. So Hillary is more than happy to stump for candidates here. She will spend lots of time in the Buckeye State. This won't help.

Weight Watchers Status

Today, I weighed in, after two weeks, and was down 3.8 lbs for a total of 42.6 lbs. I have been following the Weight Watchers diet for 36 weeks, as of today.

Yesterday was one of the worst days for Blogger in a long time

Yesterday, Blogger was either not working well or was actually not in service. There was a scheduled outage, but the time extended well beyond what they had planned. The outage affected posting of new content, and seems to have extended to blogs, as well, given the abnormally low SiteMeter readings for the day, at least for this blog. Blogger is this free service now owned by Google, and when Blogger is working, is easy to use and reliable. Reliability and usability has greatly improved over the last two years, with some horrible outages along the way.

Part of why Ford is cratering

Glenn Reynold pointed out this Tech Central Station piece about the Taurus going out of production. Frankly, I had not realized that the Taurus was STILL in production, but it was. Ralph Kinney Bennett writes about the Taurus and Ford's wrong-mindedness. I put Bill Ford, Jr. as the culprit. I am glad he stepped back. We can only hope that the company can be saved, as I am a longtime Ford customer. In Dallas, Ford trucks dominate, as well, especially the F150.

Site Traffic Tracking Tools

I use three website traffic tracking tools: Sitemeter, IndexTools, and Google Analytics. I depend on SiteMeter as my main source, but I find that Google Analytics' pie chart view of the traffic sources, by volume is a very good summary. With recent bump-up in traffic for Former Naval Person, I have been able to readily see the sources for that big increase. IndexTools is what my former employer used for monitering traffic, and there are premium add-ons to the service that are quite useful, for tracking things such as downloads, by document. I do not have that, and in any case, I only have moderate use for that feature, as downloads are not the main focus of any of my blogs and website.

Paul McCartney is apparently a drug using lefty, who thought that Heather Mills, also a lefty, and pretty enough, would be a good match. However, she is only out for Heather, and apparently was so obviously a gold-digger and using Paul to gain prominence, that he dumped her. Now, she is apparently threatening to tell all sorts of dirt, unless he pays her £100 million. The Sun has the story.

Today is an extraordinary day, due to Google Image Search

This blog has had a huge spike in traffic due to Google Image Search. The spike or bump started late yesterday, and has continued without letup. What is happening is not based on anything posted in the last day or two, but for whatever reason, Google Image Search is serving up pages with links to images from the last 6 months, or more. Nothing has changed but Google Image Search, so this blog is being served up for searches. We will be interested to see the trajectory of the bump, and how long it persists. My practice has been to both link to the page that something is in, and to the image with a popup. I would rather not, as a practice, link so that a picture is visible on entering a page, as that costs someone bandwidth. If a reader clicks the link, that will cost, as well, but it is not automatic.

Michael Barone says that we are not going to see a political realignment in 2006

Michael Barone has a commentary at RealClearPolitics.com, where he says that 2006 will not be a realignment like we saw in 1994. I believe that is caused by the Democrats that we have. If we had some "other" Democrats, who were appealing and had ideas, they might well sweep the board. At best, the Democrats might win narrow control of the House and Senate. That is not even a given, and could still not happen. For whatever reason, Carl Rove is said to be "optimistic" about the 2006 election, although we have yet to see why that is.

Walking in Memphis: the song brought back fond memories

I had liked Marc Cohn's song, Walking in Memphis, before I ever spent any time there. In fact, I was working in Memphis for 2-1/2 years, and developed some strong ties. I heard the song, today, in Steak and Ale, while we were celebrating our anniversary. I was immediately bombarded with the memories and emotions, while listening. Memphis is very much in the South, and the people reflect that. They are very friendly and polite, and it cuts across racial and ethnic lines. It is quite a different atmosphere from Minneapolis, although I like Minneapolis for different reasons.

Glenn Reynolds is really negative about the Bush administration and the Republican party. If he wants to go ahead and vote Democratic, he is welcome to do so. I happen to like my Texas Republican candidates and will vote for them. The problem people in the Republican party are from places like the Upper Midwest and East, but people who live their elected these people, for whatever reason. I would not have voted for them, but I never had the chance.

Unleaded regular is now below $2/gallon at many stations

I saw at least four gas stations that had unleaded regular gas for under $2.00 per gallon. The Tom Thumb gas station, with the discounted price of $1.969/gallon was the lowest that I saw. Even one Exxon station had it for $1.999/gallon. This is in Mesquite, Texas, on the southeast side.

Air America has filed for bankruptcy

Yahoo Finance has the news that Air America has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This has seemed inevitable for a long time, as the business practices of the liberal network seemed likely to doom the network. Only shady deals kept the network afloat this long. My wife watched Oprah's show, tonight, with Frank Rich. Somehow, it ought to count against Democratic campaign spending limits, as it was 100% a "donation in kind". No money changed hands, but the entire message was anti-Bush, anti-Republican, anti-war, and pro-Democrat.

Ed Morrissey says that France has a big problem with Muslims

Ed Morrissey, writing at Captain's Quarters, says that Muslims in France are waging a war against police within the mostly Muslim housing projects:

The French have a real problem on their hands in the projects. Where radical Muslims gain ground, a rejection of state authority follows, and the French resistance to assimilation has allowed radical Islam to fester in these areas. It should surprise few now that the isolation of the Muslims in France has resulted in violence and a de facto intifada, and the problem will not get better by appeasing the rioters and allowing them to drive the police out of the projects.

Le Intifada should serve as a warning to Europe and the West, and not just in terms of immigration policy. Radical Islamism threatens the basis of the nation-state, and once it gains a toehold, it becomes difficult to roll back. That's why we have to push back against it whenever and wherever it appears and convince moderates and fence-sitters that theocratic rule is not inevitable.

My favorite, small software company has dropped Axis 2 for webservices

I have had a relationship, at various times, with a small software company for almost two years. Earlier this year, I had tried to integrate the Apache Axis 2 product, an open-source Java webservices framework, with a new product. I struggled with Axis 2 for a long time, and wrote a bunch of code to use the web services generator. There were continual problems, and I heard this morning that they finally switched to another framework, Codehaus XFire. XFire seems to work well and required less code to use.

The system works

I have a great deal of confidence in our system of government and elections, in particular. The system is very messy, but I would say that "we get what we need" at any particular date. We apparently "needed" eight years of President Clinton. Admittedly, people are heavily influenced by the mainstream media, which is overwhelmingly biased to the left and for the Democrats. Fox is the only big counterforce, and they are hated by the left. I discount that influence, because even when it succeeds, "ordinary people" look at what is happening and decide if they like it or not. They may elect a set of bozos, but that is for either four or eight years, and then the "problem is solved".

A year ago, Peaches was slender

I suspect that she is not now, but a year ago, Peaches Geldof was slender. She might not have been as slender as "Fifi Trix Belle" (I kid you not), her sister. The Geldof girls were cursed with a mother (the late Paula Yates) who liked goofy names. I think that she thought that rock star daughters needed to have appropriate names (what I think are goofy). The Sydney Morning Herald had a story, about a year-and-a-half ago with a pic that showed Bob with two of his daughters. He also adopted Paula's daughter by the INXS guy, an Australian.

I don't understand why Peaches Geldof would shoplift, but that is the claim. Digital Spy says that she was questioned about stealing a coat at Urban Outfitters, when she set off an alarm on leaving the store.

The Yahoo Mail Beta seems to be doing better

For better or worse, I am trying the Yahoo Mail Beta, again. I switched back to the classic version, last time, because of performance issues. At its best, performance has been much better. I am seeing signs, though, that mail is starting to slow, again. Still, they must have added server capacity since I last tried the Beta.

Rather mercifully, the Texas Rangers finally fired Buck Showalter

Except for the owner, most people have recognized that Buck Showalter had not worked out as manager for the Texas Rangers. Their young GM had put together a super team for this last season, but they misfired and didn't even play .500 ball. I cannot really tell how much of that was caused by the quality of guidance Showalter was giving players. What has been clear is that Showalter's game decision-making has been sub-par for the Rangers. Well, now he is gone. I am hoping that the GM will be able to find suitable candidates who might actually be interested in the job. The Dallas Morning News has a story on the subject.

Feasibility studies

The nasty thing about modern society, with the 7X24 news coverage is that what would otherwise be isolated events turn out to be feasibility studies for a particular type of crime. The was true for the original school shootings, such as Columbine, and we found out that the attack at the high school in Colorado proved the concept of a sexually-motivated attack at a vulnerable school. That spawned the crime at the Amish school in Pennsylvania. I still am in favor of full reporting, because parents and authorities need to know the truth, so that they can arrange protection and be alert. I think that the attempts by the local media in the Dallas area to suppress information about crime victims who are children are mistaken. Parents need to know if a predator is targetting boys or girls, for example.
